Food Storage Supplies

There are four basic components to food storage.  Technically there are five including the food itself, but we’ll focus on the actual food storage parts and leave the choice of what kind of food to store up to you. If you’re having trouble getting started, feel free to check out different types of food storage and the storage life of bulk foods.

The first item is a food grade storage bucket.  These buckets generally come in five or six gallon sizes. Don’t be cheap thinking you’ll save a few dollars by getting a non-food grade storage bucket.  Even though the food will be kept in a Mylar bag, there’s always the chance the bag may break, especially if you need to utilize your food storage.  If you’re using a non-food grade bucket, you risk contaminating your food if anything happens to the Mylar.

Next, you’ll need a gamma seal lid to create an air tight seal for your stored food. Gamma seal lids aren’t 100% required but do come in extremely handy.  They allow quick and easy access to your stored food and ensure an air tight seal.  Traditional lids generally come in two variety; either a non-resealable tear tab style lid or a hammer style re-sealable lid.  Obviously the disadvantage of the non-sealable lid is once you tap into your bucket, you’re not able to seal it back up.  This can lead to waste if you don’t consume the food fast enough.

Finally, the food itself will be stored in Mylar bags and the oxygen absorbers will be placed in the Mylar bag and in the bucket prior to sealing it all up.

Water Storage & Filtration Supplies

For water storage and filtration supplies, there are three essential items you’ll need. The Water BOB turns any bathtub into a sanitary water storage reservoir of up to 100 gallons.  The Berkey Water Filter System is the best there is.  Used by the Queen of England and relief agencies around the world, this system works great at home with large families or social gatherings, travel, outdoor activities and during unexpected emergencies.

For travel and on the go use, the Aquamira Water Treatment Drops are a great addition to stash in your survival kit or travel bag.  Capable of treating water for Giardia, bacteria, Cryptosporidium, and more.
